Crush Agrumi: From Agro-industrial By-products to Paper

Favini

Crush Agrumi addresses the challenge of valorising agro-industrial by-products by transforming residues from citrus processing into a resource for high-quality paper production. The project belongs to the fields of circular economy, upcycling and material innovation. Depectinised citrus pulp, a residual material generated after successive stages of citrus valorisation, is recovered and used as an alternative raw material, replacing part of the conventional wood-derived cellulose. Crush Agrumi is part of Favini’s broader Crush paper range, developed through the recovery of different agro-industrial by-products.

Crush Agrumi addresses the challenge of valorising agro-industrial by-products by transforming residues from citrus processing into a resource for high-quality paper production. The project belongs to the fields of circular economy, upcycling, ecodesign and the circular bioeconomy. Materials that would otherwise progressively lose value along the supply chain are redirected into a new production cycle and used in a higher-value application.

In industrial juice production, only part of the citrus fruit becomes the final product. The remaining fraction generates what is commonly known as citrus pulp, from which additional components such as essential oils, pectin, bioethanol and other compounds can be extracted for different industrial applications. After these successive processing stages, a residual material known as depectinised citrus pulp remains. This material is generally directed towards relatively low-value applications, such as animal feed or biofuel production, and in some cases may ultimately require disposal.

Favini intervenes at this point in the value chain. Through an upcycling process, depectinised citrus pulp is recovered, micronised and incorporated into papermaking, transforming an agro-industrial by-product into a raw material for a higher-value product. The result is Crush Agrumi, a paper in which residues from citrus processing replace part of the conventional cellulose used in paper production.

The innovation lies not only in substituting one raw material for another, but also in establishing a connection between two different production systems. A by-product from the food-processing industry becomes an input for the paper industry, extending the value of resources that have already been extracted and processed while reducing reliance on virgin raw materials. The initiative therefore provides a tangible example of cross-sector resource valorisation, industrial symbiosis and life-cycle-oriented design. Crush Agrumi is part of Favini’s broader Crush paper range, which applies the same principle of valorisation to different agro-industrial residues. The collection demonstrates how an approach initially developed around individual agricultural supply chains can be extended to a wider variety of residual biomasses, turning by-products from agriculture and food processing into functional and aesthetic components of paper. Rather than treating these materials as waste to be managed at the end of a production process, Crush reframes them as resources for a new manufacturing cycle. In this way, the project illustrates how upcycling can contribute to reducing the use of virgin raw materials, extending the value of existing resource flows and creating new connections between industries in accordance with circular economy and circular bioeconomy principles.
