Piccoli RAEE, grande Coop

Piccoli RAEE, Grande Coop is a pilot project promoted by Erion WEEE and COOP Lombardia to make it easier for citizens to return small WEEE. The initiative represents an experimental extension of the “the ‘1-for-0’ take-back scheme” service, aimed at promoting the disposal of small WEEE at large-scale retail stores while testing a replicable proximity-based model and raising citizens’ awareness of the correct ways to dispose of their WEEE. Between October and December 2025, the pilot phase of the project involved five Coop stores in Brescia, Legnano, Lodi, Pavia and Treviglio.

The “Piccoli RAEE, Grande Coop” pilot project was promoted by Erion WEEE and COOP Lombardia to facilitate the collection of small waste electrical and electronic equipment through a proximity-based model integrated into large-scale retail stores. The pilot phase, carried out between October and December 2025, involved five Coop stores in Brescia, Legnano, Lodi, Pavia and Treviglio. In just three months, 1.2 tonnes of small WEEE were collected. The results highlighted the importance of the proximity of collection points and awareness-raising activities, which make waste collection simpler, more accessible and easier to integrate into citizens’ everyday habits. Following the positive results of the pilot phase, the project was extended in April 2026 to five additional Coop stores in Lombardy: Busto Garolfo, Novate Milanese, Parabiago, Trescore Balneario and Voghera. From January to June 2026, more than 3.1 tonnes of small WEEE were collected. Including the pilot phase, the project collected a total of more than 4.3 tonnes of waste at the participating stores.
The design choice is supported by measurement through simplified or partial indicators Between October 2025 and June 2026, a total of 4.3 tonnes of waste was collected, generating estimated environmental benefits of approximately 7 tonnes of CO₂ avoided and nearly 38,000 kWh of energy saved. Dedicated information points were also activated at all participating stores, staffed by qualified personnel who provided citizens with information on the correct disposal procedures. The initiative was supported by dedicated press releases and, during the initial months, by an OOH campaign, helping to ensure broad and widespread communication throughout the area. The project ended at the end of July. >
